Language Disorder

A language disorder is a communication disorder that affects a person’s ability to understand and/or use spoken and/or written language. This can manifest as difficulties with vocabulary, grammar, sentence structure, or understanding complex language. It is not due to hearing loss, intellectual disability, or lack of exposure to language.

Language disorders can be developmental, meaning they are present from early childhood, or acquired, meaning they occur later in life due to injury or illness. They can range in severity from mild to severe and can affect a person’s ability to communicate effectively in social, academic, and professional settings.

Early identification and intervention are crucial for children with language disorders. Speech-language therapy is the primary treatment for language disorders and can significantly improve a person’s communication skills.
